Volunteers
Kiara Simonis
Kiara joined the Bird Boarding team in August 2009. She has a cockatiel of her own named Tinkerbell, who has stayed at Bird Boarding on many occasions. Putting her client days behind her, Kiara started working at Bird Boarding as a work experience student for a week. During this time, she hoped to broaden her knowledge of companion parrots and aviculture in Australia. Kiara and Bird Boarding both enjoyed the experience and she was asked to come back as a volunteer.
Working closely with Nikki has helped to reinforce her dream of becoming an avian veterinarian. Kiara has taken on the required mathematics and science subjects at school so that she has the best chance to go on to university and study in the highly competitive area of veterinary science. Kiara's role at Bird Boarding includes feeding the birds, cleaning cages, preparing fruit and vegetables, and keeping the boarders active and engaged by exercising them.
Lauren Robertson
Lauren walked in to Bird Boarding in 2008 while searching for someone who could take good care of her parrot when she was on holiday. Lauren and her parrot enjoyed Bird Boarding so much, that she has been coming back most weekends since. By volunteering at Bird Boarding, Lauren has been able to enjoy working with a number of amazing parrot species from around the world. Lauren observes their unique personalities and finds it a privilege to develop relationships with many of the companion parrots. Lauren feels she is constantly acquiring new knowledge by working closely with the other Bird Boarding staff and volunteers, which she applies in her own home to better care for her parrots.
