FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions – Boarders

Q: My bird is an ‘only child'. How is it going to cope with being housed in an unfamiliar environment with other birds?

A: Parrots are social animals. In the wild, they live in flocks. Bird Boarding provides a relaxed and clean atmosphere that parrots feel comfortable in. Our regular guests that have had plenty of time to settle, serve to reassure the new parrots that they are in a safe place.

We find that most of our guests enjoy the company of other parrots, growing in confidence as they settle in. It is not uncommon to see a new guest preening within minutes of arrival, indicating that they feel entirely comfortable in their new surroundings. Better yet, our staff are trained in reading parrot behaviour and will notice immediately if your parrot is feeling uncomfortable, allowing them to change the environment or routine to suit the parrot's individual character. All activities within the business are supervised by a qualified and active avian nurse. All members of the Bird Boarding team love and care for their own birds, so they know how to connect with yours!

If you are feeling uneasy about leaving your bird, we suggest that you ring to organise a tour of Bird Boarding or speak to one of our friendly staff about your concerns.

Q: Why can't I bring my bird's cage to make it more comfortable for him/her?

A: High quality HQ cages are provided as part of the boarding fee. We have found our range of cages to be suitable for every different type of animal that we have cared for. Bird Boarding has lofty standards when it comes to housing for birds. The owner of the business has spent years educating people about appropriate housing and set up. The staff here are particular about cleanliness and therefore enjoy the peace of mind that comes from providing our regularly disinfected cages.

Bird Boarding is set up in a way that maximises space during peak periods. The housing that we provide has been selected carefully to fit the building. In most cases we will insist on boarders being housed in our cages during their stay. Late bookings during peak season may be asked to provide a reasonably sized cage if there are non available.

Q: Will my bird forget me while I am away?

A: No. Most birds have an excellent memory and use it for all types of learning in the wild. We have had many experiences of long-term boarding (a year or more) with no indication of the bird ‘forgetting' the owner.

Q: Does my bird have to share a cage with other birds?

A: No. Shared cages are not provided for guests unless the birds are housed together in their current situation. All cages are situated in open rooms so that they can keep vocal and visual company. These rooms are climate controlled for comfort. Birds are exercised one at a time to ensure there is no physical interaction between our guests. Birds can visit their friends during this supervised time if they wish.

Q: Are the boarded birds allowed to fly around together in the rooms?

A: No. Parrots possessing different levels of flying skill pose a risk to each other. We do not allow this so as to minimise the risk of injuries caused during flight.

Q: Do all birds get personal time outside of their Bird Boarding cage?

A: Yes. Birds that board with us are given time to exercise daily. The bird can choose to spend this time with a trained attendant or on their own. Please provide guidance to the assisting staff member when you drop your bird off.

Bird Boarding provides a specialist service for companion parrots and other birds. Part of our service involves the teaching of behavioural change techniques and basic husbandry. All activities within the business are supervised by a qualified and active avian nurse. The Bird Boarding team has experience dealing with all categories of behaviour in parrots. You will be surprised how much your bird will open up and learn to enjoy the company of new people during a stay at Bird Boarding.
